Welcome to Cove

Originally known as Forest Cove, the City of Cove rests on the eastern slope of the Grande Ronde Valley, nestled between the Wallowa Mountains and neighboring ridges. Cove's name is derived from the unique niche formed by the base of Mt. Fanny, Mill Creek, and the southern ridges. The community boasts stunning views, beautiful sunsets, and rich soil.

Mt. Fanny, standing at 7,150 feet in the Wallowa Range, commands the eastern skyline. To the west, approximately 16 miles away, lie the Blue Mountains and the City of La Grande, separated by a fertile agricultural valley and the meandering Grande Ronde River.

Cove is a close-knit community with around 680 residents within city limits and another 1,200 in the greater Cove area, often referred to by locals as "...in the school district." This small town offers essential services and a few extras, with in-town businesses catering to various needs. Cove takes pride in its public library, K-12 charter school, corner market, fueling station, volunteer fire department, styling salon, steakhouse, and the iconic Cove Drive-in. The presence of numerous home-based businesses reflects Cove's strong entrepreneurial spirit.

Local attractions such as the Warm Spring Pool, Cove Christian Camp, Ascension School Camp & Conference Center, and the Historic Hendershot Home provide a glimpse of the rich history and culture. The charming Episcopal Chapel and bishop's residence, located adjacent to the Ascension grounds, are listed in the National Registry of Historic Buildings.

For over a century, Cove has been a hub of fruit production, boasting approximately 500 acres of commercial orchards primarily cultivating sweet cherries and peaches on the hillsides above town. Livestock production and processing, field crops, and small-scale produce growers contribute to the town's agricultural diversity.

With its close proximity to the Moss Springs Trailhead, just 7 miles east of town, Cove serves as a convenient gateway to the Eagle Cap Wilderness and Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, offering residents and visitors alike endless opportunities for outdoor recreation.
